I love to burn candles; often times daily, I'll have a candle lit in my office or bedroom. It wasn't until I was given a soy wax candle as a gift when I realized the distinct difference between soy based and petroleum candles.
Here's my observation: Vanilla is a favorite scent of mine; when my soy candle had burned out I missed my vanilla scented room and remembered I had another one that had been given out as a favor at a wedding I recently attended. While burning the "wedding favor" candle I noticed the smell wasn't as sweet, it was sort of "chemically", and there was a lot of smoke coming from the wick. I blew it out (which left a horrible smell too) and decided to wait a while before lighting it again. Hey, I even thought maybe it was the matches I used that caused the "not so goode" smell. The next day the same thing! By then I had already gone to my favorite co-op for groceries and had purchased more candles for my office (soy of course!).
There's no doubt, there's a distinct difference in soy-based from petro-based. The soy candles last longer, don't create any smoke, burn cleaner, and have a more true scent. I've also noticed soy-based candle makers pour their waxes into containers that are classic and clean in design which can be re-used later. You'll never see that from Glade Candles!
Burning candles is also a great way to scent the air without the harmful fumes from room sprays. Inhaling all those VOC's is so not goode, my current fave is the one pictured above - Method's vanilla and apple, it smells like a carmel apple to me, sooo goode!
